Decorating Forum > painting woodchip paper

i've just hung woodchip paper ( for several sound reasons) and was wondering whether its a good idea - or a really bad one- to go over it with diluted PVA as a prinmer before painting it. It may be totally unnecessary, but would it harm?

DO NOT USE PVA!!!! it doesnt need it, just couple coats of emuslion, PVA is made for decorating, people who say you can use for certen thing in decorating havent got a clue!

if you do use it, you'll have problems with emuslion.

why were you thinking about using it?

I can think of two or three ways of tackling a wall before resorting to woodchip, but today it does still have its uses. Its a good answer to minimum prep in older knackered properties for the rental market, particularly student lets and dhs, cheaper bed and breakfasts have their fair share too.

As big ad points out, PVA has very little use in our business, remember essentially its a glue, and your supposed to put the glue on the back of the paper not the front! Diluted to different consistencies it has various uses in general building, mainly as a sealer and for waterproofing (to a degree).

You dont need to prime paintable wall coverings, more likely the surface they`re to be hung on may need priming such as a glue size.

I`d also be interested to know why you thought you could use it as a primer?
